EOS Mechanical HVAC project: Waukegan National Airport

Provide HVAC system for new U.S. Customs Facility at Waukegan National Airport

Waukegan, IL, February 2021

Project
We installed a Trane Roof Top Unit (RTU) with integrated Tracer Concierge system to provide heating and cooling to Homeland Security’s new U.S. Customs addition at Waukegan National Airport. In addition, we installed split styems, exhaust fans and electric wall heaters as well as gas piping to feed the RTU and the standby generator onlite.

Challenges
All the thermostats and VAVs were linked wirelessly to the RTU using Trane’s Tracer Concierge system. We weren’t familiar with this software, so EOS Mechanical’s team attended virtual training sessions to become certified in this technology. As a result, we were able to execute on site and fully integrate the system to meet the customer’s needs. Additionally, we were able to train our customer on how to manage the system should they need to add, remove or modify the existing equipment.

Due to COVID-19, the lead times were erratic on specialty items for this project. EOS Mechanical’s team made the decision to preorder and store all of the specialty items at our fabrication shop. This allowed us to receive material and deliver to the job site using our personnel on our schedule.

Midway through the project, Homeland Security updated their security doctrine, which required emergency backup systems. In response, we mobilized to the project 3 weeks earlier than planned in order to add the necessary piping to support the backup systems.
